A parody uses elements of a prior work to target the prior work itself, satire uses elements of a prior work to target some other aspect of society.

Submitted by Steve Lambert:

Dan Provost, an MFA student at Parsons, created FacebookBusinessSolutions.com, a prank on Facebook’s Beacon software bomb from a couple weeks ago [see articles below for details about this software and the outcry it has sparked].

Facebook Business SolutionsAccording to msnbc.com, Beacon was created “to boost revenue growth by tapping into the deep social connections between Facebook users, who use the site to share messages, photos and other information with online friends.”

Here are some excerpts from the FacebookBusinessSolutions.com Web site:

Facebook Image Scan
Facebook Image Scan uses a sophisticated computer algorithm to filter through every image in the user’s Photo Album, identifying brand markings and products and tagging them with links back to your homepage.

Facebook Recycle
The items a user deletes on their own personal computer can be very important data for a business to uncover. Facebook Recycle harvests files from a user’s Trash Bin and posts the findings to their News Feed, as well as sending a copy to your business. (more…)

From Eepybird.com: What happens when you combine 200 liters of Diet Coke and over 500 Mentos mints? By Fritz Grobe (the short one) and Stephen Voltz (the tall one). Music by Audiobody.

This is the video that started it all: a backyard experiment became a cultural phenomenon. We couldn’t believe the reaction! The video even won the Webby Award for best viral video and was nominated for an Emmy Award for outstanding broadband content.

We’ve since taken Diet Coke & Mentos madness onto the Late Show with David Letterman, the Ellen Degeneres Show, the Today Show, and performed live around the world, from Istanbul to Paris, even in Las Vegas!

Religious scholars mull Flying Spaghetti Monster
    by Justin Pope
    November 16, 2007

Touched by His Noodly Appendage, by Niklas Jansson(AP) — When some of the world’s leading religious scholars gather in San Diego this weekend, pasta will be on the intellectual menu. They’ll be talking about a satirical pseudo-deity called the Flying Spaghetti Monster, whose growing pop culture fame gets laughs but also raises serious questions about the essence of religion.

The appearance of the Flying Spaghetti Monster on the agenda of the American Academy of Religion’s annual meeting gives a kind of scholarly imprimatur to a phenomenon that first emerged in 2005, during the debate in Kansas over whether intelligent design should be taught in public school sciences classes.

Supporters of intelligent design hold that the order and complexity of the universe is so great that science alone cannot explain it. The concept’s critics see it as faith masquerading as science. (more…)
